Namibia: Desert Sojourn

Sossusvlei | Skeleton Coast | Kunene

Namibia is a land of geological wonder and profound stillness — where landscapes feel primordial, shaped by wind and time into something that defies easy description. This is not a typical wildlife safari; it is an immersion in scale, solitude, and the extraordinary tenacity of life. Elephants navigate sun-baked riverbeds by memory; striking oryx stride through boulder-strewn valleys; and predators have adapted, over millennia, to survive where almost nothing should.

The accommodations on this custom Namibia safari are intimate in scale — rising organically from the landscape, where sweeping desert views and extraordinary solitude define each day. Explore by 4×4 and on foot, and perhaps by hot air balloon at dawn; when night falls, Namibia rewards you again: in one of the world’s great dark-sky reserves, the Milky Way arcs overhead in breathtaking clarity.

This itinerary journeys through three regions of singular character. Sossusvlei offers the iconic dune landscapes of the Namib — monumental, sculpted, and endlessly photogenic, best experienced in the quiet of early morning when the colors shift from deep ochre to gold. Our chosen camp benefits from a private access gate, allowing you to arrive before others do. The Skeleton Coast is wilder and stranger: a collision of desert and ocean, cold fog and ancient shoreline, where specially-adapted lions rule. Kunene, in Namibia’s far north, offers something rarer still — the semi-nomadic Himba people, whose lives are shaped by the land.

Itinerary in Brief:

Pre-safari (optional)

Arrive to Windhoek for 1 night at The Weinberg (or similar).

Days 1-3

Bush flight from Windhoek to Sossusvlei for three nights Little Kulala. Explore towering dunes and ancient valleys on foot, by quad bike, hot air balloon, and more.

Days 4-6

Bush flight from Sossusvlei to the southern Kunene region, for three nights at Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp. Explore an otherworldly landscape on day and night game drives, guided walks, and a day trip to the Skeleton Coast to visit shipwrecks and sea lion colonies.

Days 7-9

Bush flight to the far north of Kunene. Here, in this isolated but impossibly beautiful area where the desert meets the Kunene River, spend three nights at Serra Cafema Camp. Encounter the semi-nomadic Himba people, explore the Kunene River by boat (seasonally), venture out by foot, and bask in the utter peace of this remote location.

Day 10

Return by bush flight to Windhoek where you are free to continue on homeward flights, or extend your travels - options include Etosha, Cape Town, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and more.

Three people traverse an arid landscape with safari camp in the distance with a dramatic peaked roof, and towering moutains in the distance.
